Clubs & Groups
The Village Hall Committeeexists to maintain and develop the village hall. The committee is made up of a representative from each club that regularly use the hall - Piecemakers, W.I., Christian Fellowship, Parish Council, the Church, South Hill Show Committee and the Cricket Club. The remainder of the committee is made up of co-opted members and there is always room for new faces! The committee meet on a regular basis to discuss and arrange village events, maintenance and fundraising. All time is given voluntarily. Every two years a huge New Years Eve party is staged with a theme and fancy dress. The hall is decorated, games and cabaret are organized and a themed supper is cooked - a sub-committee is formed to cope with such an extravaganza. Each Autumn a Harvest Supper is organised, this involves entertainment, an auction of wares and of course a supper for all. To coincide with the Horticultural Show we organise a Funday - this includes tombola, cake stall, car boot sale, dog show and go-kart races down the village lanes. The day ends with the famous duck race! Other events that have been held in the past include Band Night, Antiques Roadshow, Indian Night, Beetle Drive, Barn Dance and Race Night. Profits from all events are used to maintain the village hall. Improvements are made to ensure the future of the building for the Parish. If you would like to join us on a regular basis or just with an individual event, or simply hire the hall for your own event then contact: | South Hill Piecemakersmeet in the Parish Hall on the first Monday and the third Thursday of each month at 7.30 pm. We began ten years ago and now have thirty members with a waiting list for new members.
The pictured quilt is the one we made for our recently staged fourth tri-ennial exhibition. A cheque for £3,000 will be handed over to "Shelter Box" which was our chosen charity this time. Our annual meeting is in February when the committee will probably change. However if you need to get in touch before then you can email Isabelle Ramage or telephone Carrie on 01759 363179 South Hill Womens' Institutewas formed over sixty years ago and its members continue to enjoy their friendly monthly meetings in the Parish Hall, realising that they are part of a very influential national organisation. Nowadays business at the meetings is kept to a minimum and this is then usually followed by a talk or demonstration (this year we have already heard about the Changing Face of the Ambulance Service, The Life of a Film/TV Extra, Gardening For Birds and had a wonderful Italian Cookery demonstration). At the end of the meeting members enjoy a very social time over tea and coffee. This is certainly how I met and made so many friends in the Parish. There are also many opportunities available to take part in events and activities organised by Cornwall County WI. DOSHSince arriving in Cornwall about 4 years ago, we have found there to be a common desire to avoid paying too much (if anything at all) for goods and services. Although a small parish, South Hill residents have a wide range of talents and skills between them. For many their skills have little to do with an occupation, but more a hobby or pastime. | South Hill Investment Club (SHIC)Formed in 1996, SHIC was set up as a way to invest in the stock market learning as we go without any great financial risk (the fact we agreed to meet at the Church House Inn had no bearing on it!) Now some eleven years later the club goes from strength to strength. We have had members come and go for various reasons (mostly moving away) but have always managed to keep our membership at our maximum of 20. Each member pays a small monthly subscription and we choose shares to buy and sell at each monthly meeting along with a few refreshments and light bite to eat. The wonders of email have made communication between members much easier and several members have gone on to make their own investments in stocks and shares with a bit more knowledge and confidence. Whilst the investments are taken seriously we do try to make meetings fun and enjoyable which was our main aim and we also have various social events during the year. Members of the club should ideally live in or near to South Hill Parish. If anyone is interested in the share club then |
